Yaso Matteria Vinas Viejas
Toro, Spain
Tempranillo
Superlative heavy Toro, with accolades to match. Seriously, serious wine.
Producer
Production
The Yaso winery in Toro is ran by Spanish fine wine specialists, Vinedos Iberian (make sure you try their Ribera and Priorat wines too). Toro was the next logical step for them - a region that dates back over 2,000 years and has some of the oldest vines on the planet due to its sandy, high altitude and inhospitability to vineyard pests.
Incredibly low yielding, over 100-year-old, vines of solely tinta de toro go into this blockbuster wine. The wines are gnarly bush vines with incredibly deed roots and produce the most concentrated fruit imaginable. The wine can therefore take 26 months in new French oak barriques with ease and balance. The wine is at least 5-years-old before release.
Tasting Notes
Blockbuster. Black and red fruits, floral violet nots, vanilla, cedar, smoke and toast back it all up. Looooong finish and complexity. Will age for 25 years but why not enjoy it now as well?
