Barrera de Sol, Garnacha 2019
DO Cebreros, Spain
Garnacha (100%) · 2019 · 13.5% abv
Barrera del Sol Garnacha comes from old vines rooted in granite soils at high altitude, delivering depth and finesse. Aromas of ripe red cherry, wild herbs, and crushed stone mingle with subtle notes of spice and dried flowers. The palate is silky yet powerful, with layers of red fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a vibrant mineral backbone. It balances elegance with structure, finishing with precision, freshness, and length, making it an outstanding expression of the Sierra de Gredos.
Production
Harvested by hand in September–October, with low yields of 0.5–1 kg per plant, grapes are picked into 12 kg crates at ~13% potential alcohol. After a 3–7 day cold pre-fermentation, the must ferments with indigenous yeasts at 20–24 ºC, followed by a 15–30 day post-fermentative maceration. Spontaneous malolactic occurs before ageing in a mix of 2,000 L foudres, 500 L French oak barrels, and concrete eggs, bringing structure, depth, and purity to the final wine.
Vinyard
Barrera del Sol is a Vino de Paraje from the southern slope of El Zaudejo, where old-vine Garnacha grows at over 1,000 m on granite soils interspersed with large rock outcrops. The sandy texture and varied depth by plot give complexity and minerality to the fruit. Southeast exposure ensures ripeness while preserving freshness. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, the wine is aged in 400 L French oak barrels and 1,200 L concrete eggs, then bottled unfiltered and unclarified, retaining authenticity and natural sediment.
