Chateau Chene Liege, Pomerol 2013
Pomerol AOC, France
Merlot (95%), Cabernet Franc (5%) · 2013 · 13% abv
A full-bodied, complex red with aromas of ripe blackberry, cassis, and hints of tobacco. Rich and velvety on the palate, with a long, smooth finish.
Production
Hand-harvested Merlot and Cabernet Franc are sorted and fermented in cement tanks, where Philippe Niarfeix applies techniques learned abroad, including cooling grapes with dry-ice to preserve freshness. Extraction is gentle to avoid heavy oak influence, and ageing takes place in French barrels—many inherited from Léoville Barton—yielding a structured, fruit-focused Pomerol made in small quantities each year.
Vinyard
Chêne Liège is a rare 3-hectare Pomerol vineyard tucked between Trotanoy and Clinet, long overlooked despite four generations of quality. Planted to 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the estate sits on deep gravel with clay and ironstone, giving structure, perfume, and lift. Low yields of around 40 hl/ha keep production scarce, while the Niarfeix family’s independent approach preserves purity and terroir focus.
Pairing
This full-bodied, complex red wine pairs perfectly with a rich, savory dish such as a slow-cooked beef stew with mushrooms and root vegetables. The earthy flavors of the stew will be complemented by the dark fruit and spice notes of the wine.
