Reflektief Palomino 2023

Wellington, South Africa

Palomino (100%) · 2023 · 12.5% abv

This is a wine that you’ll be hard pressed to replicate from anywhere in the world. Subtle pear, chamomile and almond on the nose. The palate is taut, saline and quietly complex, with a fine mineral finish.
Production

Whole-bunch pressed and fermented naturally in old oak casks. Minimal intervention allows purity of fruit and terroir to shine. A short period on lees adds texture and savoury nuance.

Vinyard

Planted as bush vines in 1977, these are some of South Africa’s oldest Palomino parcels, rooted deep in decomposed granite soils in Wellington. The inland climate is hot and dry, but evening breezes temper the heat, helping preserve freshness in the fruit. Once a workhorse grape used mainly for brandy, here Palomino finds rare expression as a single-varietal wine of character, shaped by site and climate.

Pairing

A brilliant match with grilled fish, tapas or salty cheeses. Its quiet complexity also suits Asian-inspired small plates.
