Ried Steinberg 1ÖTW Grüner Veltliner 2024
Wagram DAC, Austria
Grüner Veltliner (100%) · 2024 · 12.5% abv
Golden with green flashes. Quince and lemon zest open to fennel seed, crushed rock and a faint tobacco lift. The palate starts broad then narrows along a cool, stony line; stone-fruit succulence balanced by sapid citrus and meadow-herb bitterness. Creamy texture without weight, driven by keen acidity and a long, mineral tail.
Production
Handpicked late September to early October, berries see a 5-hour skin soak. Native yeasts guide a temperature-controlled stainless-steel ferment over three months; malolactic allowed. The wine rests 4–8 months on fine lees in tank and is bottled after about a year with minimal handling to preserve site imprint.
Vineyard
Ried Steinberg, an Erste Lage in Oberstockstall, is a steep southeast slope at 230–240 m. Vines range 16–66 years. Bedrock is slate and granite, giving definition and a graphite edge; average rainfall 450–750 mm keeps growth in check. The site’s early light and steady ripening deliver fruit with both depth and nerve.
Pairing
Refined, saline dishes amplify the mineral line: grilled char with fennel and lemon, river trout with brown butter, or chicken with tarragon. For spice, try Thai green curry with vegetables. Mature Austrian mountain cheeses make a quietly brilliant match.
