Tokaji Aszú 2017
Tokaj, Hungary
Furmint (90%), Hárslevelű (10%) · 2017 · 9.5% abv
TR Tokaji Aszú balances sweetness and freshness. Citrus, raspberry, baking spices, almonds and pineapple fill the nose and palate, supported by vibrant acidity. Despite its richness, the wine feels lively and poised.
Production
Botrytised berries were picked in October and November and soaked for 48 hours in fermenting late‑harvest Furmint–Hárslevelű wine. After traditional pressing in a Kossuth press, the must fermented spontaneously for one and a half months. The wine then spent 24 months in new 300‑litre Hungarian oak barrels before resting a further two years in bottle.
Vineyard
The grapes come from the Palota vineyard in Tállya: a south‑east facing slope between 180 and 220 m. Vines 15–40 years old are rooted in volcanic soils of andesite, rhyolite, tuff, zeolite and quartz. Farming has been organic since 2013 (certified 2019), with no pesticides or herbicides and physical weed control. The site is vegan friendly.
Pairing
This sweet Tokaji Aszú crowns a meal or stands on its own as dessert. It is also excellent as an aperitif with foie gras or blue cheese.
